Aphorism

               If it weren't for caffeine I'd have no personality whatsoever.

  This aphorism reminds me of my life, and Joseph Campbell 's "Hero's Adventure" because it has several things in common with both. In my daily 

life I drink coffee every day in order to function properly and to have personality just like the author states in the aphorism. Joseph Campbell

says that a hero is someone who leaves one condition and finding a source

 to take you to another; richer condition. This describes the same as the aphorism because it says that a person leaves one condition , and embraces another condition which is better; by drinking caffeine. 

Metamorphoses questions Scene five

1. Hades is the Greek god of the Underworld,and Fates Tantalus and Sisyphus
Are some other beings of the underworld.

2. Orpheus can get Eurydice back if he walks out of the underworld without looking back at her.

3. This story can be interpreted in different ways. It can have a meaning of unquestioning what you are told because if you do there will be consequences. Another possible interpretation for the story would be that if you look into the past you will get hurt again.

4. I agree the most with the first interpretation because it is the most evident. Hades tell Orpheus that he must not look back, but if he did he would loose Eurydice. When Orpheus looked back he lost Eurydice.

5. This story is a love story because it talks about Orpheus doing whatever he could in order to get back the woman he loved. This story talks about the kind of love that is impossible due to the circumstances of life and death. Like Romeo and Juliet.

Metamorphoses Questions

1. Erysichthon cuts down the tree because they needed the wood; despite the fact that it was centuries old, or that it was in a grove sacred to Ceres.

2. The term piety means the quality of  being religious or reverent  according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

3. This term relates to Erysichthon because it´s his lack of piety what causes him to cut off a sacred tree.

4. This scene of metamorphoses is similar to The Giving Tree because  In both stories there is a character who wants more, and more. In Metamorphoses Erysichthon wants as much food as he can get ,after hunger goes to him, and in The Giving Tree the bo always wants more things from the tree. He wants his apples, his branches, and his trunk. Another connection between these two stories is the fact that Erysichthon´s greed maks him cut off a tree, and the boy in The Giving Tree ends up destroying th tree because he needed more things from the tree.

5. This scene of Metamorphoses is similar to the passage of Siddhartha when Siddhartha´s father wants his son to stay with him in the Brhamin cast instead of following the path that was right for him. This attitude shown by Sddhartha´s father is similar to Erysichthon´s attitude when he cut down the tree. They both prefer to act on behalf of their own interests rather than for the good of thoes around them.

Siddhartha Reading Section 4

This section of Siddartha reminded me of when I ran into an old friend from my childhood because in this section Govinda, and Siddartha run into each other again. As well as Govinda, I ran into an old friend who had changed. In the novel Govinda hears of a wise ferryman, and goes to see who it is. This ferryman is Siddharta; who had changed by receiving wisdom from a person named Vasudeva.
When I ran into an old friend from my early childhood I also realized she had really changed, but in a very different way compared to Siddharta. Siddhartha received wisdom and grew as a being, but my friend was full of bad habits when I saw her. Govinda departed after Siddhartha asked him to kiss him in the forehead, but my friend did not even say goodbye, nor happiness that we ran into each other. Like Govinda I understood why my friend became what she became.

Siddharta Readin Section 3

I have never met a person who had abandoned his life , but I read about it in another book. This book is called One Hundred Years of Solitude. In this book a character named Jose Arcadio leaves his entire life. This is similar to when Siddharta leaves Kamasawami and Kamala to move on. Another similarity of these two stories is the fact that Kamala is pregnant with Siddhartha's child, and Pilar Ternera (Jose Arcadio's mistress) was also expecting a child. However there are factors that make the cases different. Kamasawami sent out people to look for Siddhartha because he thought he had been kidnaped, but nobody did much to look for Jose Arcadio because they knew he was leaving voluntarily. The main difference is that Siddhartha was leaving a place where he had previously arrive, but Jose Arcadio left the place where he grew up. These differences in the events will lead do different outcomes in their stories.

Siddharta Reading Blog Section One

I have never had a discussion about the path I will take in this life. However I have heard of a person who had a big argument with his parents about what he would do with his life. He wanted to be an artist but his parents owned a construction company, and they wanted him to be an architect. This is similar to Siddhartha because Siddhartha's father was a prominent Brahmin leader,and he does not like the idea of his son joining the Samanas. Siddharta stands in the room for several days showing his determination. The person who wanted to become an artist also showed his determination, but he did it in a different way. He said that he would become an artist even if he had to confront his parents. After this his parents agreed just like Siddhartha's father agreed to let his son follow a different path in life.

Analect 4.7

This analect reminds me of Los Nule because they made “mistakes”. They made them to get money or political power. They bribed people, and they Also took vulnerable people´s money. Los Nule betrayed people to get money. They bribed people in order to win the elections. They payed people , and trick them into voting for them. They also threatened people in power to control decisions. An example of this si Los Nule. They did al of this.

Los Nule ofrered money to Samuel Moreno. They did this to get chances to take more money. Of which Samuel Moreno took ten percent for giving them the chance. They threatened people to win elections and trick people to vote for them.They bribed superiors in order to seize power. They payed people to vote for them. They bribe superions to control their decitions, and to gain power. They left their promises unfulfilled , and the government broke. These are the kind of mistakes Confucius talks about.

Confucius states that people'mistakes will show their character. He meant that people's actions showed their intentions. Los Nule's actions show dark intentions. They repeat the same mistakes, and this shows wat kind of people they are. Their actions show them as corrupt people.

Visual Paradoxes

      A paradox is something that is inconsistent in logic. this is a paradox because it is inconsistent to

think that dinosaurs are still living among us . Another illogical property of this image is the fact that

a T-rex in inside a person´s room. First of all this is definitely not their natural habitat, and this

type of dinosaur would be so big that it would not fit inside a house. If it isn't small enough to be in a

house it is too big to be inside a bedroom. I does not make any sense the fact that there is no possible way

in or out for a dinosaur. These are all reasons of why this picture is a paradox.

     This image shows a paradox because it is full of illogical things. The most clear one is the fact that

small planets are floating inside the atmosphere and not in space. This does not make sense of the laws

astrophysics. The fact that balloons and sand clocks are the same size as houses  is also a paradox because these two things should be a lot different in size than what they are. Another inconsistency would be the fact that there is a sign almost the size of a planet. Again these two objects should be more different in size. There are plants hanging out of one planet when gravity should pull them into the planet.This image shows not one but many paradoxes.

 

This picture is a paradox for the following reasons. The typing machine had not been used for decades when the Ipad was invented shows a clear example of a paradox. An ipad can´t be connected to a typing machine because there is

no port that would allow it, and typing machines don't have bluetooth. Another clear inconsistency is the fact that the sticks used to type are typing below where the ipad is. Overall this picture shows a paradox because an electronic device cannot be connected to a non-electronic device.

Into Spellbound

1. Every single person in the movie spellbound wants to win the spelling bee for different reasons. Winning is specially important for Neil. This is because according to spellbound he has been studying the hardest and he also has a lot of pressure from his parents.For him winning is practically an obligation. Indian culture demands excellence in everything in life this means that Neil must feel pressure to win the national spelling bee because he thinks that if he doesn't he will bring shame to his family. As I could tell from the film his family is native of the Indian region of Goa, which is the only christian region in India, this region is also known to be the one with best education in India. These cultural backgrounds must fill Neil with fear of losing because if he loses he will feel that he let down his family and his country. Also Neil has studied really hard and if he loses he will feel that he wasted a lot of effort.

1. After watching some scenes of spellbound I concluded that spelling bees are not necessary. I got to this conclusion because it is pointless that people put so much pressure in kids for something so ridiculous as spelling. It would be the same as if they did a similar nation wide contest on basic arithmetic skills. Spelling is something basic in life there should be no spelling bee because there is simply nothing extraordinary about spelling. It would be like a nation wide contest of babies learning to walk, it is simply something a normal person needs to know for life. Spelling bees are also ridiculous because they put too much pressure on their kids. The pressure these kids feel is almost as if their lives depended on them winning.

Rhetorical Techniques in Advertisments

Ethos: 


     Ethos is the credibility of the, or in this case the viewer. This shows ethos because this piece of advertisement is trying to convince us to help. They do this by showing the image of the helping hands. This means that they have done this before and therefore they are a credible source.


    This piece of advertisement shows ethos because it´s message to the viewer is to do something to help the environment. The fact that they show a hand holding the world is a clear example of juxtaposition makes the viewer infer that they are experts in helping the environment.

      This image shows ethos because it is telling the viewers to donate money to charity. This shows ethos because they show hands giving money and this makes it clear that they can trust the organization when they give them money.

Pthos:

  This cigarette advertisement shows pathos because it is appealing to the emotional side of the consumer. This is shown in the part where it says be happy.



           This piece of advertisement shows pathos because it shows many material things that make people happy coming out of the bottle of coke. It also describes the word coke as an emotional feeling. This is shown where it says "Open up the Coke side of life". as if coke where a feeling or philosophical point of view.



   This piece of environmental advertisement shows pathos because it makes people feel bad fot deforestation. It is also a good example of ethos and logos.

Logos:



     This piece of advertisement shows logos because it states that coke has continuous quality.
Logos it the logical approach to the consumer and this piece of advertisement is trying to convince the consumer that coke´s quality is something logical.

      This piece of advertisement shows logos because it is showing facts about the consumption of fast food in several countries and the consumer can use reason regarding obesity is these countries.

Malala Yousafzai A Real Hero

Malala Yousafzai was only eleven years old when she begun writing a diary for BBC urdu using the fake name. In this diary she described the situation of  the swat valley in northwest Pakistan.In it she describes the radicalism in which these fanatics rule over other people triying to impose their extreme version of the muslim sharia law on ohers by force. Malala describes these events in some of her entries. In one othe them that was written on January 13, 2009 she describes how afraid she is of going to school because the Taliban have banned females from getting any kind of education. She also shows she is afraid when she tell that on her way home a man yelled “I am going to kill you”. Luckily he was talking on the phone and was threatening someone else. Another proof that the Taliban are radicals is the fact that hey banned girls from using colourful clothes. This is also described in her diary. Malala also describes how the Taliban are radical in a misogynous way. She describes this in the entry she expresses that she might not go to school again, because the taliban issued an edict that banned all females from receiving education. Malala has shown that the taliban are religious fanatics who think that they are always right.

Malala started writing her diary when she was eleven. She started doing this with her father´s support who said that it was a risk but it was a greater risk not to say anything about the horrible situation that the Swat Valley was living. In this diary she describes how sharia law is enforced by the Taliban in ridiculous ways. In 2009 she started to appear in tv as a women's rights defender in Pakistan. Last year she was nominated to the International Children's Peace prize and last year she was awarded a national peace prize in Pakistan. This national prize was later re-named after her. After being able to speak out in a society that is filled with fanatic indoctrination she truly deserved those awards. Malala Yousafzai was shot last week in a murder attempt by the Taliban, but the doctors say that she is now out of danger, and local journalist Faryal Guhar said that this murder attempt will only give strength to Malala´s voice.

Pakistani Activist Girl Shot

      As she was on her way home from school 14 year old Malala Yousafzai was shot by a taliban militant. This is due to the fact that she had been writing a diary about life under the Taliban in Swat Valley in northwest Pakistan. She had been writing this diary anonymously. She revealed her true identity when the Taliban were evicted from the region. Pakistani Taliban militants reported to BBC that they tried to murder Malala Yousafzai for being anti-Talibán and secular. Although other girls were with Malala at the moment of the attack, and one of them was shot to there are two versions of the events. The first version states that a van stopped and a bearded man called Malala´s name before shooting her in the head. The other version says that the girls were getting in a bus when they were attacked. Despite the events doctors say that Malala is out of danger and will recover.

 The fact that the Pakistani Taliban wanted to kill a harmless girl shows without any doubt that this is a radical fanatical group. First the Taliban have a history of terror and radicalism. Eleven years ago the ruled Afghanistan. During this time period they forced women to wear the burqa which covers the entire body and face, and bombed Buddhist statues in Afghanistan. They also made it against the law to listen to any kind of music. These radical points of view inspired a brave girl such as Malala to write a diary describing the situation to BBC urdu. The fact that Taliban followers tried to kill Malala Yousafzai only confirms that the Taliban are radical and short minded fanatics that think they are always right.                I have never lost jewellery ,or being expelled from school for hitting the principal. But I understand that people who go through these experiences. People who lose jewellery with sentimental value tend to get aggressive towards the person who took it away. This would explain why someone would hit the school principal this way. Afterwards Marjane's mother said that she feels worried that her child would be raped and then executed. This is a natural horror for any parent.

               The fact that it was forbidden to use jewellery and other similar items in school is comparable to how the Taliban enforce their radical view of the sharia law in the same way the fundamentalists did in Iran. The scene where Marji points out that her teacher is telling a lie about political prisoners is comparable to good moments we have all had in which we correct the teacher. In the next pages it is shown how her family worries that her attitudes might get her executed in the future. This can be compared to situations in which your parents tll you not to talk about a specific subject.

            When Marji´s parents decide she must go to Austria is comparable to how many people are moving out of Venezuela for security reasons. Also you can see the act that Marji and her parents are nervous and sad. Her parents because they are sending their child away, and Marji because she is going to a place where she does not really know anyone. And none of them know if they will ever see each other again. This is comparable to situations in which a parent has to give his child to an adoption agency for many different reasons.They are all scared and sad because they do not know if they will ever see each other again.

    This chapter reminds me of Colombia a little. Here in Colombia unfortunately there are people who manufacture  fake passports. But in persepolis the want a fake passport for Marjane´s uncle who was ill and needed treatment in England. Here in Colombia people made these fake documents to smuggle drugs into other countries . The fact that the place where these documents were being manufactured was destroyed doomed the uncle. Ironically  his real passport arrived the day of his funeral.

This chapter also reminds me of a case in which a man was waiting in line for medical treatment and died. This is comparable to the fact that uncle taher´s passport arrived the day of his funeral.The fact that this man was not able to receive medical treatment is really similar to uncle Taher´s case.The fact that the “passport manufacturers” were hiding a communist woman in their basement is comparable to political persecution here in Colombia. People often had to hide just for their political beliefs.

  This chapter of persepolis reminds me that in some countries there was political persecution. A few years ago there was political persecution here in Colombia. Many people like Marjane´s uncle Anoosh looked forward to go live in another country because people here with certain political view were being murdered. The man disguised as a sheep reminds me of how latin americans try many different crazy things in order to get to the United States. These people will try to disguise themselves to pass illegally through the border just like people escaping Iran at this time. This Hyperlink will talk about political persecution in Iran.

The scene where Marji´s crush announces that he is going to the US,reminds me of some years ago when the situation here in Colombia was so bad that many people left. This is also shown in the scene where most of her family leaves Iran. The part where they tell Marji that Anoosh went back to Moscow in order to not tell her he is in prison reminds me of when a pet dies and you are young. They do not tell you he is dead, they tell you that he ran away. The part when Anoosh is executed as a russian spy reminded me of some cases where the Colombian military murder civilians and then dress them up as Guerrillas.

         As described in this chapter of persepolis often, when a dynasty is overthrown it is replaced by another dynasty. This is what happened between Marjerine´s ancestors and the Shah´s father. Something else I noticed was that her grandmother had to live through poverty because the Shah´s father took everything away from them. Often deposed royal families are then forced to live through poverty, a good example of this would be when the russian Czar was overthrown, he and his family were forced to live in Siberia as common people before their execution. This is also comparable with the revolution Iran went through in this time period. This Hyperlink is a good example.

        I also connected the fact that the Shah´s father visited Cyrus the great´s grave with other megalomaniac leaders who visit important historical figures in their graves to try to make a point. A good example of this is the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez taking out Simon Bolivar´s bones from his grave. Both leaders did thi to in a way try to compare themselves with these remarkable people to gain popularity. Another connection with leaders I can make is the fact that the Shah´s father spent a lot of money in celebration of anniversaries. Castro does that to distract people of the bad situation of Cuba.

      Another comparison I made was when Marji´s father does not come home on time. The families of people who serve in the army live in the same kind of stress because they do not know if their loved one will return. Another comparison I made was between how people treated as a martyr a man who died of cancer. The most shocking thing of this is that his own wife started to speak of him as a martyr. Either they just wanted to make a political statement of they were criticizing the health system.

I have never been in a situation where I have to dress in a specific way by law. However I can see  how muslim women who are forced to wear the veil feel. I can understand why some devout muslim women would protest in favor of the Islamic veil, and others would protest against it. On this chapter I see again that the modern way of thinking ,and conservative religious values disagree  regarding many subjects. These subjects include dressing. This is specially shown when Marjane said that she is deeply religious but very avant garde. Here is a Hyperlink about the Islamic veil in France.

  Another thing that was mentioned in this chapter, and I experienced was a child´s foolishness. This little girl wanted to become a prophet at an age we all want to become something that is not normal. One thing I can relate to in this chapter is the fact that some people went out into the streets and protested against the veil. This reminds me of when I wa part of a massive demonstration there was against the FARC. I also connect the fact that Marji wants to become a prophet later in life with some people who have been great religious leaders ever since they where born. A good example of this is Indian prince Siddhartha Gautama, who was later known as Buddha. Both he and Marji had the same aspiration of becoming a good influence on the world.

Another thing I can connect this to is when her grandmother plays along and tells Marji that she will be her first disciple. I can connect this to when we were younger and had foolish childish fantasies and our surrounding adults just played along with us. In the scenes where Marji talks with God, can be compared to imaginary friends that ost of us had when we where younger.

                               This tablet talks about how Gilgamesh and Utnapishtum met. Gilgamesh asks to Utnapishtim how did he obtain eternal life. Then Utnapishtim tells him the story of how, thanks to a voice he heard through his walls he was able to achieve eternal life. The voice tels him that the gods will create a great flood and that he has to build a boat with a couple of each living thing. This story is strikingly similar to the story of Noah´s Arc. Then he and his wife gon tinto the boat. Afterwards it rained for six nights and seven days. After the flood they arive at mount Nisir, really similar to mount Ararat in the Bible. Afterwards Utnapishtim frees a Dove like in the Bible. Then the gods grant him and his wife eternal life. Besides the similarities with the Bible, the story of Utnapishtim teaches that with a great acomplishment, comes an even larger reward.

                                          After this Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh that he must go through a test to.The ocean Mist sleeps Gilgamesh. Every day Utnapishtim´s wife would leave water near Gilgmesh, for seven days. The first one was really bad, the next one was rottern but  little better. Every day the water got  a little better until one day it was fresh. This day Utnapishtim touched Gilgamesh on the fore-head and Gilgamesh wok up. After this Utnapishtim tells Gilganesh to get a plant, jis reward, this plant is in the sea. After a boatman adorned Gilgameh with ornaments worthy of the king of Uruk, they both went in search of it. Stoping every 20 leages to eat and thirty to rest the night. But after all this effort a snake took the thorny plant. Disapointed they went back to Uruk. The story of the snake also remids me of the story of Adam and Eave in the Bible,because thanks to a snake´s corruption they where not able to liv in paradise. This teaches nus that even after a great effort, things might not work out after all.
